Office XP
Standard for Students and Teachers
This is a specially
discounted licence for individual students and teachers.
- Office XP Standard
for Students and Teachers includes:
- Word 2002:
to create professional and effective documents
- Excel 2002:
to access, analyse, share and display data
- Outlook 2002:
to manage email, calendar and tasks effectively
- PowerPoint

Only students
and teachers engaged on a formal DfES course may use this software
and only for educational purposes in their homes.
It cannot be used

| Boxed
Product
Boxed Product
licences (also known as FPP) are usually bought by home users and
organisations with just one or two computers.
Qualifying academic
organisations get special discounts on the price of the FPP product.
Everything the
customer needs is in the box: the software CDs, manual and End User
Licence Agreement (EULA).
Boxed product
is the simplest way to acquire a licence as it involves no administration.
The licence is
perpetual, which means that the customer can use the licence forever,
without having to pay any more for it - but it does not give you
unlimited rights in the software.
For example, it
is illegal to copy the discs or pass them on to someone else to
copy.
Boxed Product
licences can be a convenient way of buying software but they are
not cost-effective for larger volumes.
Even customers
buying just five licences may benefit from entering into an Open
Licence Agreement.
|
| |
 |
|
Open License
Microsoft Open
Licence is a volume discount agreement suited to small and
medium size businesses.
Customers buy the licences
outright and pay upfront, and can continue adding as little
as one licence at a time at the relevant Open Licence discount
level.
Academic organisations also
receive additional discounts. |
|
 |
Customers must
buy a minimum of five licences |
|
 |
Software acquired
through Open Licence is 'perpetual' - customers have the right
to use it indefinitely |
|
 |
Payment is a one-time
upfront cost. After the initial 5 licence purchase, customers
can continue buying software under the agreement for two years |
|
 |
Software Assurance
can only be acquired when a new licence is bought |
Open Licence customers receive a
volume discount.
The
level of discount depends on the number of licences bought at the
start of their agreement.
This discount then applies to any
additional licences bought during the following two years.
For instance, a customer needing
just two copies of Windows XP upgrade, two copies of Office XP and
one copy of Visio 2002 can set up an Open Licence agreement and
receive volume discounts.
Licences for Software Assurance also
count towards this minimum.
After this order, they can then buy
one copy of software at a time and still qualify for volume discounts.
Some customers may wish to acquire a further five or more licences
in a single order within the first two years of their agreement.
These customers can start a new agreement
- and continue buying under Open Licence for a further two years.

School
Subscription 3.1
Campus
Subscription 3.1 is a one-year or three-year
'rental' agreement for Higher and Further
Education Institutions with a unit count
of at least 300.
Customers can license an individual department
rather than the whole institution - if it
has a unit count of at least 300.
Once customers have Campus Subscription
3.1, they can also license students: either
a specific number of students or the entire
population.
What is a unit count?
Calculate unit counts by multiplying the
number of full-time employees (those who
work more than 200 hours a year) by the
number of desktop products installed (all
equal one point).
For servers,
multiply the points for each server product
(noted in brackets) by the number of servers
it's installed on.
What products are included?
Customers 'rent' their choice of the latest
versions of the following software. All
products count as one point except where
indicated:

What
happens at the end of the agreement?
Forty-five days before their subscription
expires, the customer can choose to
renew their agreement for another
year or three years.
If
they choose not to renew they can
either buy perpetual licences (permanent
rights to use the software) or remove
all the software from their computers.
What's the cost?
Prices are based on the unit count
multiplied by the number of products
the institution wants to use: |
|
 |
Unit
count 300-2,999: level A |
|
 |
Unit
count 3,000+: level B |
|
If
extra staff join during the year, they
are automatically licensed free of charge.
