| Recognising
the Public Sector Challenge |
 |
|
To deliver citizen-centric services,
the UK public sector must integrate its information infrastructures
with advanced mobility devices for front-line workers.
At the moment, an operational divide
exists: separating key front-line workers - police, firemen, nurses,
doctors, teachers, soldiers - from the information they need to
do their work more effectively.
Go back five years, and IT was really
seen within Government as little more than a cost on the balance
sheet.
It was a necessary evil, essential
for providing the good works of Government. Today, it's different.
|
|
HP is
already closely involved with helping local authorities overcome
this challenge.
Today, HP is delivering the infrastructure
that supports the 24x7 operation e-government will need. It's providing
the software and services that enable that infrastructure to be
managed efficiently and effectively.
|
 |
| It's creating the end-to-end mobile
and portal solutions, which significantly improve the productivity
of local authority workforces and drive up the quality of services
they provide. |
|
| With its Government
Gateway, HP is helping agencies simplify connection to back office
systems. With solutions like these, HP is helping Civil Government
to make the delivery of electronic services to businesses and citizens
a reality.
|
| Enabling
Key Health Workers
A significant part of all healthcare
delivery within the NHS is delivered directly by front-line workers.
General Practitioners, community nurses, midwives, paramedics, health
visitors, work directly in the community. Doctors, nurses and other
clinical staff are key front-line workers within hospitals. All
are mobile, working with the patient, whether in the community or
at the bedside.
Providing these key front-line workers
with mobile devices and applications is a first step. Tools such
as Pocket PCs, Tablet PCs, and smart-phones, can all help transform
the way front-line staff work. HP is an industry leader in developing
next-generation lightweight mobile computing devices. Working with
its partners, HP has pioneered advanced solutions for front-line
public sector workers.
|
 |
At York Health Services Trust for
example, HP designed and implemented a high performance, wireless
network. Now doctors have real-time access to electronic patient records,
from the bedside, speeding both diagnosis and patient treatment. |
|
In addition patients can order their
meals through a bedside touch screen. It may not sound significant
but, when you consider that 20% of the hospital's £1m food budget
is written off through waste, it is saving a substantial amount
of money.
There are a number of good reasons
why authorities are now so focused on mobility.
One is simply that it saves time
and stops mistakes in a big way.
If people can put details into devices
there and then, in the field, it really saves on all that time spent
doing paperwork back in the office.
So, mobile applications mean that
front-line workers spend more time in the field, not tied to a desk.
