Data loss is a serious threat to companies of all sizes and catastrophic data loss can destroy a business. But
most data loss isn't the result of a big disaster, it's
caused by human error, viruses, and disk malfunctions.

A suitable backup routine provides the best protection
against data loss of all kinds. And tape technology
remains the most efficient and cost-effective means to
back up your system, whether you're a small business
or a global 24x7 operation.

Most business managers readily understand the value of their data. The network manager of a corporate data centre typically manages 2.2 terabytes of backup every day.

Reliability is paramount.

The person who looks after a company's data bears a heavy burden of responsibility.

Although backing up valuable company data is crucial, it is only half the solution. You also need to be able to recover this information.

Incresingly, businesses are storing cartridges using automated libraries, to increase capacity and reduce the need for human interaction. (32% of data loss is attributed to human error).

The cartridges are kept in slots and picked for use in the drive when needed. The autoloader locates any given cartridge by its barcoded label.

All tapes look and work the same. A tape is made from metal particles trapped inside a coated binding. The particles are arranged in tracks along the tape.

The drive writes to the tape by re-arranging the particles along the tracks into sequences.

The drive reads the data by interpreting particle position and converting it for the computer to understand.

There are six main types of technologies used for HP branded media:

- travan, DDS and AIT for small businesses and networks

- ultrium, DLT and SDLT for mid-range and enterprise backup (via libraries)
